EXERCISE PILL - The Couch Potatoes Savior?

The story is everywhere, scientists have discovered a pill (AICAR) that ‘tricks’ the muscles into thinking they’ve been exercised.

This pill has been shown in MICE who did no exercise to produce a 44% increase in treadmill distance. The hype is that this substance (AICAR) changes the physical composition of the muscle from fast twitch fibers to slow twitch fibers. The researchers believe this substance could help ward off diabetes, reduce weight, and prevent heart disease. 

While this is easy to get excited about and it sounds great, my job is to bring you the reality of this research. Several issues arise when we look at this product.

First, it’s only been tested in mice and as we’ve seen with other prominent discoveries - they don’t always transfer to humans. 

Second, the change is only in the type of muscle fiber and while these changes may make a difference for endurance athletes - fiber type does not play the only role in overweight, or de-conditioned individuals, or overall health, etc. Individuals can be overweight, have diabetes, heart disease, and many other conditions and have a higher proportion of slow twitch fibers. As a matter of fact, the avg person has 55% slow twitch fibers and over 50% of Americans are still overweight. Not such a mircacle fat reducer now is it?

Third, A zillion additional benefits occur with regular exercise that are not impacted by this substance, i.e. stress reduction, bone strengthening, lower cholesterol & blood pressure, etc. 

Fourth and finally, let’s look before we leap. History is the best teacher. Several examples that didn’t pan out as well as originally promoted: Alli, Phen/Fen, Creatine, Electric Muscle Stimulation, weight loss surgeries and countless other products/treatments/procedures that have not lived up to their initial hype and more importantly have caused many individuals a great deal of extreme negative side effects. 

While an exercise pill sounds great - it also sounds too good to be true and you know what that means - it is.
